Take 1 – Prologue

It kind of went in the direction of explaining our thought process… Is this what we want?

■ ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ ■

In the previous years of Design Led Futures, the advancement of technology has been the backbone of the investigations. The concept of the ’singularity’ (the point at which a computer processing power equals and surpasses that of a human brain) opens up the gates for massive changes in the understanding of our world, and the developments in technology that this will bring. This inspired the work of previous years to think about what might come from this progression.

We took another direction, focusing instead on the machine itself, the intelligence that would support this progress. This intelligence, dubbed Being, and it’s relationship with Humanity would be the formulation of all our thoughts and inspiration.

A quote by Raymond Kurzweil grounded our ideas, gave us a concept that would govern our understanding of this Being; he proposed that no intelligence could surpass that of it’s creators. From this, we determined that while we could continue to grow the processing power of a system, it’s logic could never grow beyond that of humanities. An intelligence equal to our own would be created, something we could relate to as one human to another.

As our research progressed, we recognized that an equality of mind would result in an equality of rights and understanding; Relationships between us and Beings would be the groundwork for progress and advancement, the groundwork of society, existence, and the worlds themselves.

All the areas of investigation in this project are build on this relationship, between Human and Being. What follows is half a year’s work that shows our understanding of how Being will have shaped our lives and our humanity.

Two more parts of the archives are up. Only Gina, Jamie and me to go!

Hope the filming is going well!

Perhaps more factual data with references is required? Depends how it’s being done! ><d

Part One -  Connection

The symbiosis between Human and Being is built on mutual benefit. In addition to the Being gaining the opportunity to grow and develop, inhabiting a human will let them experience human senses, and through the human’s senses, inhabit the physical world in addition to the digital. The nano-machines communicate directly with the human nervous system through the spinal cord, and the machines are built to interpret the electrical impulses into sensual information, the same way the human brain does.

This neural connection is a two-way system, letting the Being create its own electrical impulses in the nervous system. This process is used to allow the Human to experience and understand the Digital world. The Being translates the raw data of the digital world into the five senses of the human, letting them understand virtual systems as well as experiencing information transposed onto the physical.

This method overlaying the digital information onto the physical has become a structural basis for digital experiences. Digital experiences are built to compliment the physical; entire environments can be witnessed in a combination of physical and digital for a unanimous experience.

Part Two – Interaction

The first nano-machines that were injected into the human system were for medicinal purposes; Precise, fast response operating required the microscopic machines to be connected to an artificial intelligence, an early iteration of Beings. This technology developed to the point where many started to directly connect themselves to digital networks with internal nano-technology. The connection became less rigid as technology progressed, moving towards adaptive systems.

The way Beings connect with their Human is the culmination of this progression in technology. The connection begins as a direct communication through hand gestures and verbal commands from the human; The Being may choose to appear to the Human as a physical form through the optic nerves, or have the aural nerve communicating sound. As the relationship progresses, the Being will forge a greater understanding of their Human’s neural processes, and can understand basic neurological impulses as thoughts and muscle intents.

The way humans trigger muscle memory can be applied to functions that don’t exist, but that can be performed by a Being. A human may tell their body to open a connection to a network in the same way they tell their arm to turn a door handle; though the function doesn’t exist in the body, the Being can interpret the electrical impulses through the nerves as that intent, and perform the function. As the Being becomes closer to the Human, they will connect communicated information with the related neurological impulse, and create a communication that is unhampered by physical constraints.

Again, the Archive

Here is the finished archive! I think… One question, do we want the pop up objects to scroll or not? And any tweaks to the scrolling speed? (I still need to limit the range, will do so once we know how many articles we’ll have).  If not, I’ll head in to uni after lunch and get the last of the files. Make sure your photos are on there! (I’m looking at you, Jamie!)

The Archive?

Here is the very basic system of the archive, the grey will probably go and I made a mistake overlaping one bit, but you can see for yourself how it works. GOtta fiddle round with the scroll speed etc.

Is bigger better?

thick-timeline

A very rough thicker timeline. Is the visual impact what we want?

Archives for the Website

Wednesday, June 10th, 2009

I have the files from the second website, but if you have new images, wish to revise the old ones, or have videos that you wish to show at higher resolution, make sure you put them in the folder on the D drive of the chosen computer.

Also, if you wish to change your text since the second website, put a simple .txt file with this info in your folders on this drive.

See it here!

Video links will work soon!
Archives will be built over the next week, if you have your individual projects, get them to me, or if you’re feeling generous, put them in the folder structure shown earlier!
